The isolation transformer protects your household appliances, precision instruments (medical or industrial grade), energy storage systems (batteries), and other electrical equipment. It is usually installed inside the inverter product in the entire solar system.
What is solar inverter? Solar inverter is a kind of equipment that converts direct current generated by solar panels into alternating current, which is an important part of photovoltaic system. Its main function is to convert the direct current generated by solar panels into alternating current required by household appliances, so that solar power generation can be directly applied to various electrical equipment.
Why add an isolation transformer to your solar system?
1. Electrical isolation and protection
Isolation transformers enable electrical isolation between the input (i.e., the solar power system) and the output (i.e., the grid or load). This isolation not only prevents the DC component and leakage current from entering the grid, but also prevents faults and disturbances in the grid from affecting the normal operation of the solar system. At the same time, because the output and input ends of the isolation transformer are completely “open”, there is no power connection, only magnetic connection, which can effectively protect the safety of personnel and equipment. Specifically, it prevents the danger posed by metal parts that may be electrically charged due to accidental simultaneous touching of electrically charged bodies or damage to insulation.
2. Suppress harmonics and improve power quality
The power generation of solar energy system has the characteristics of peak and valley, and the power generation in different time periods has a large deviation. After the direct current passes through the inverter, there will be a large amount of clutter. Theses clutter needs to be filtered and cannot pollute the power grid system. Isolation transformers, especially photovoltaic isolation transformers designed for photovoltaics, have a good role in filtering harmonics. It usually adopts Dyn11 wiring mode. And the third harmonic circulation in the D connection winding can generate the third harmonic magnetomotive force in the transformer. These third harmonic circulations are offset with the third harmonic magnetomotive force of the Y-connected winding, so as to eliminate the interference of harmonics on the power grid system and improve the power quality.
3. Voltage matching and stable output
The electricity generated by solar systems is usually direct current, which needs to be converted to alternating current by an inverter before it can be connected to the grid or used by users. The isolation transformer can convert the voltage and stabilize the AC output of the inverter. It can match the voltage of the photovoltaic panel to the voltage required by the grid, which uses high-voltage transmission. At the same time, the isolation transformer can also realize the stable control of the output voltage by adjusting the turn ratio of the primary winding and the secondary winding. When the output voltage of the solar system rises, the isolation transformer can automatically reduce the output voltage. When the output voltage is reduced, the isolation transformer can automatically increase the output voltage, so as to ensure the stability of the output voltage.
4. Improve power grid adaptability and lightning protection
Isolating the electromagnetic induction of the primary and secondary sides of the transformer can prevent current sudden change and improve the adaptability of the power grid. In addition, because the solar panels of the solar system are usually installed outdoors, they are vulnerable to natural disasters such as lightning strikes. The isolation transformer can effectively isolate these external disturbances, especially the lightning shock, and improve the safety and reliability of the system.
