What is Isolation Transformer?

An isolation transformer is a stationary device designed to separate primary and secondary windings, ensuring physical and electrical isolation between circuits. It transfers electrical energy through magnetic induction, using a magnetic field to induce an electromotive force (EMF) in a secondary circuit while maintaining the original frequency.

In transmission and distribution systems, isolation transformers are employed to adjust voltage levels by stepping up or down, ensuring that voltage and current capacities match between the coils. A crucial role of these transformers is to mitigate voltage spikes in supply lines, which could otherwise disrupt service or damage equipment if they reach the load.

When placed between power supply lines, an isolation transformer helps diminish voltage spikes before they impact the load. Additionally, it prevents grounding issues on the secondary side, thereby reducing ground loop interference and minimizing noise effects in the load equipment.

An isolation transformer ensures electrical isolation between its primary and secondary coil circuits. This design allows for the safe transfer of electrical power from an alternating current (AC) source to equipment or devices while keeping the equipment electrically separate from the power source. This isolation is primarily used for safety purposes or to reduce electrical transients and harmonics. Typically, in step-up transformers, the secondary coil has more turns than the primary coil, whereas, in step-down transformers, the primary coil has more turns than the secondary coil.

Isolation transformers adjust voltage output by altering the voltage input according to the required voltage, current, and turns ratio. In single-phase AC systems, voltage fluctuations occur simultaneously, making it less suitable for powering large motors and industrial machinery. In contrast, three-phase power uses three distinct signals, each with a separate peak time, which helps to eliminate the oscillations present in single-phase systems. This results in smoother operation, reduced vibration, and simplified equipment design, making three-phase electricity more effective for powering large motors and heavy industrial equipment.

Types of Isolation Transformers

Isolation transformers are available in several different types, each designed for a specific purpose. Here are the most common types.

Constant Voltage Transformers

Constant voltage transformers, also known as CVTs, are a type of isolation transformer used to maintain a steady voltage output over varying input voltages and current levels. They work by using an autotransformer and feedback circuit to detect changes in the output voltage and make adjustments accordingly. This helps ensure that electrical devices connected to the transformer receive a constant voltage, even when there are fluctuations in the input voltage.

Ultra Isolation Transformers

Ultra-isolation transformers offer even higher levels of electrical isolation than standard isolation transformers. These types of transformers use special construction techniques and materials to drastically reduce the transfer of electric current between the input and output coils. This helps prevent any grounding issues or unwanted electrical noise from affecting the performance of connected devices. Ultra-isolation transformers are often used in sensitive medical and research applications to ensure the highest level of accuracy.

Drive Isolation Transformers

Drive isolation transformers are a type of isolation transformer for powering electric motors. These types of transformers use special winding techniques and insulation materials to reduce the transfer of electrical noise between the input and output coils. This helps ensure that electric motors connected to the transformer receive clean, consistent power without any interference or fluctuation in voltage. Drive isolation transformers are used in various industrial and commercial applications.

Galvanic Isolation Transformers

Galvanic isolation transformers are a type of transformer that provides electrical insulation between two circuits or systems. This type of transformer creates an isolated circuit by using a special winding technique that prevents any electrical current from passing through the primary and secondary coils. This ensures complete electrical isolation, helping to protect against potential damage caused by electrical noise or surges. Galvanic isolation transformers are common in medical equipment or industrial settings to ensure the highest levels of safety and reliability.

Dry Isolation Transformers

Dry isolation transformers are a type of transformer that uses dry air as an insulator to provide electrical isolation between two circuits or systems. These types of transformers use a special winding technique and insulation material to prevent any electric current from passing through the primary and secondary coils. This helps to ensure complete electrical isolation, helping to protect against potential damage caused by electrical noise or surges. Dry isolation transformers applications include medical, industrial, telecom, and more.

Why Use Isolation Transformers

  • As the name suggests, isolation transformers are used to isolate the two circuits electrically by providing a galvanic isolation between them. There are many reasons to use an isolation transformer.
·Isolation transformers block transmission of the DC component in signals from one circuit to the other, but allow AC components in signals to pass.
·Isolation transformers are used for impedance matching to get the most efficient power transfer between stages and to keep different stages electrically isolated to prevent ground loops.
·Isolation transformers prevents harmonics from transferring from one side to other side.
